How to Add an AI Chatbot to a Shopify Store (theme.liquid)
Build an agent from your store URL, copy the one-line script, open Online Store, Themes, Edit code, paste it into theme.liquid just before the closing body tag and save. Then add shipping, returns, sizing and payment rules so the agent answers the questions that block checkout.
Step by step
- Create the agent. Paste your store address, for example https://yourstore.com, into the Clipaist workspace and build.
- Copy the install line. Open Install and copy the single script line with your key.
- Open the theme code. In Shopify admin go to Online Store, Themes, the three-dot menu, Edit code. Duplicate the theme first so you can roll back.
- Paste into theme.liquid. Open layout/theme.liquid and paste the line just before the closing body tag. Save.
- Test as a shopper. Open the storefront in a private window and ask about shipping and returns.
Good to know
- On most plans checkout pages are locked to custom scripts, so the chat appears before checkout, which is where questions happen.
- Add delivery areas and times, free-shipping threshold, return window, payment methods and a size guide to Knowledge or key facts.
- The standard agent does not look up live orders or inventory. It explains how to track an order and hands over to you.
If something does not work
View the page source and search for agent-widget.js. If it is missing, the code is not active or is in the wrong place. If it is there, check Allowed websites in your agent settings (the exact address must be listed, or leave it empty while testing), clear your site cache or CDN, and check that an ad blocker or a Content Security Policy is not blocking scripts.
Script-delay or minify-combine plugins can postpone the widget. Exclude agent-widget.js from those features.
